Police net cable cutters in substation sting
Twin Palm’s finest officers have foiled a trio’s plan of stealing copper cables early this morning.
The officers, patrolling Twin Palm Road like guardian owls, spotted a suspicious grey Toyota Ractis dipping into a nearby ZESCO substation under the cloak of night.
Following the vehicle like a shadow, they swooped in to find the brazen bandits in the act of stealing a 11kV cable into bite-sized pieces, seventeen in total, each measuring three meters.
A search by the cops yielded an arsenal of ill-gotten gains hidden in a black backpack – two hacksaws, a pack of used blades, a pair of pliers ready to pinch, and a screwdriver itching to dismantle.
The three suspects, Mulope Nawa, 39, from Bauleni Compound, Miston Nyirongo, 35 of Chainda Compound, and Edward Nyangu, a 27 year old Yango driver from Kamanga Compound, all with undisclosed house numbers, now find themselves behind bars.
Their escape chariot, the grey Toyota Ractis with the registration number CAD 1820ZM, has also been impounded.
Angelique International Limited, the contractor overseeing the ZESCO project, is counting their lucky stars as the pilfered cables were valued at aK118,727.00.
Zambia Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed the incident and arrest.
“A docket of case has been opened, and investigations are ongoing,” said Hamoonga.
